'I can't live with this cat': Boyfriend is leaving his girlfriend because he can't stand that her cat sits in the sink and makes noise with toys, she's devastated and is willing to try everything to save the relationship

You know, as people who have cats, we don't think that living with one is such a big deal. We don't think that we would have a problem living with our partner's cats either. Heck, even if our cat (god forbid) passed, we still wouldn't have an issue living with our partner's cat. But apparently some people do have a problem with it. 

We think that it's because these people don't understand cats. That's the only thing that would explain why from - someone would say that they are not able to handle being 'second' to the cat, or why someone would ask their girlfriends to choose between them and the cat, or why someone would call their girlfriend unhygienic for kissing her little cat on the forehead. Or why someone would think that a cat sitting in the sink is cause for breaking up with their girlfriend, which is what happened in today's story. Cats sit in sinks all the time. It's cute. It's adorable. We don't get it.

  • Look, we know that we are generally biased towards cats and that we often tell people to ditch the human for the animal, but in this case… yeah, it could not be clearer. There is no debate. You should ditch the human for the cat like- yesterday.

    I have the sweetest cat which is an ESA. hes friendly with people and so cuddly, ive had him for almost 2 years and even when i couldnt care for him and risked losing him, i always paid someone to watch him for me, hes my biggest commitment. hes stayed in 5 different houses with various people just so i could keep him.

    Me and my boyfriend moved in together for only a month and hes going insane, he hates that the cat goes in the sink and leaves fur everywhere, and he gets annoyed from the sound of his toys and when he knocks stuff over and gets into things.

    its just part of having a pet. my boyfriend works from home and fewls he has to constanrly watch the cat from going in the sink. he also doesnt interact with the cat so me and my cat are the only one with a relationship. Im devastated and dont know what to do or what to say to possibly save the relationship

    Silent-Set-4916 OP I was at risk of losing my cat since i was struggling to find a place to live. Thats why we moved in together so soon, it was an act of care from him to help me pay for a place to let me keep the cat. now hes saying he cant live with it like he thought he could.

    palacesummer Well, you posted in a Cat subreddit so most comments will be all for keeping the cat and ditching the boyfriend who doesn't like cats, but, if you're looking for advice and not just validation, can the cat stay in a different part of the house just while he works?     causing mayhem in the house. Sometimes they go in the very spacious spare room while I'm in meetings where they have food, water, toys, litter boxes, and beds. That is how we make it work. If he is not willing to compromise at all then, yes, let him leave and it sounds like you will be better off.

    Silent-Set-4916 OP We inly have one bedroom the rest of the house is one room with the kitchen. (also the cat is a food theif its hard to eat without him trying to take food off your plate) weve tried putting him in the bedroom while we eat but its a sliding door and the cat can open it himself

  • It's good that you found this out about your partner so early on. It's better this way. The less time you are with him, the less attached you will be. And it sounds like your cat never approved of him in the first place, so nothing lost. Listen to your cat's instincts. They know.

    VastShallot8098 Is your boyfriend giving you an ultimatum? Regardless of the situation that would be unacceptable to me personally. Your partner will be as unwilling to compromise in the future as he is now. I can understand the annoyance at the cats behavior, my cats annoy me with the same stuff lol, but it's up to the both of you to find a solution.

    Don't want the cat knocking stuff over? Don't leave stuff out on the tables or counters. I have to have all my pens hidden away cause my cat will steal them, I have to have everything pushed up against the wall on the counters too. Don't want the cat in the sink?     spaceballstheprofile Is you boyfriend leaving you? Or asking you to leave? If you wish to maintain the relationship, have you talked to him to see what could be done to improve the situation? If you must seperate, are you working or do you have an income. If you are at risk of being unhoused can you reach out to a cat shelter to see if there's volunteers that will help someone in your situation? For example, foster your cat until you find stable housing?

    anything to help the situation. Its not quite yet at the point of me being forced to find a new place/ more income but I am definitely taking advice on if it does come to that. I have applied for housing assistance in the past but wasnt able the recieve it because money i recieved from a student award put me over the maximum amount, hopefully now enough time has passed where i qualify

    Sure-Management-7742 If your boyfriend can't deal with basic cat behavior in exchange for making you happy then he's not right for you. He will never change. There are solutions to these issues but it's odd to me that he is so intolerant. In the future you definitely should try to find solutions to your cat's behaviors because there is almost certainly a fix but it sounds like dude just doesn't like cats.
